My research is conducted in the context of Språkbanken (the Swedish Language Bank), a research and development unit, whose research activities are directed at the development of language resources and tools for all modern and historical varieties of written Swedish.
Språkbanken has a sizeable user community made up of linguists and language technology (LT) researchers working on Swedish. LT researchers can download most of our resources and use them freely for any purpose, in most cases even commercially. In order to accomodate the needs of linguists, we have invested much time and resources on developing easy-to-use web interfaces for conducting linguistc research on very large text corpora – Korp (additional information) – and large lexical databases – Karp (additional information). The work on Korp was rewarded with the Erik Wellander Prize in 2014.
In recent years we have put much effort into extending the areas of use of our language resources and tools, specifically in the direction of e-science tools for humanities and social-scientific research, an area overlapping significantly with the so-called digital humanities. Some concrete efforts in this direction are, e.g., the Knowledge-based culturomics project (financed by a framework grant from the Swedish Research Council), and SWE-CLARIN, the Swedish node of the European research infrastructure CLARIN ERIC.
